Materials.
Looking at existing, leftover fabrics from previous productions and the search for new long-lasting raw or natural quality options. The materials we choose have a major impact on the quality and thus the lifespan of the clothing. Continuity is also extremely important to us in design, so when we find a reliable material, we continue to work with that fiber for future collections.
Our responsibility starts right from the collection’s design phase. When selecting the fabrics, we strive to use GOTS and FSC-certified qualities.
(Please note that some garments from previous collections ,on the website, still might be made from deadstock. We are switching fully to a 100% raw and natural sourced fabrics without chemicals. Deadstock fabric means using the leftovers of others fashion businesses. This method is sustainable, because otherwise the leftover fabric will be burned or thrown away in the sea. We give these leftover fabrics a second chance. However, at Borrenberghs, we decided to switch fully to a organic supply chain to get a full transparent view of every part of the production of the fabrics)
COTTON : Cotton is know as one of the most popular material in the fashion industry; denim, shirts, dressed, coats and so on. But cotton is responsible for 25% of the worlds pesticides use. that means a huge amount of petrochemicals are being poured into our soils, running into our waterways and poisoning our environment. Of all natural fibers, cotton is by far the thirstiest crop, using far more water than is needed to grow other fabric-yielding crops such as hemp, bamboo, flax or eucalyptus.
We only use certified organic cotton. That means that the cotton has no pesticides, chemicals fertilisers or genetically modified seeds to minimising the impact on the environment. The impact of water pollution by organic cotton is 98% less than conventional cotton production. Organic cotton also ensures a healthy working environment for workers and small scale farmers. Because synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are not used in organic cotton production, nitrogen emissions are greatly reduced, thus, organic cotton produces 94% fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared with non-organic cotton. Wherever possible we use organic cotton that has been certified under the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS), an organisation specifically focused on providing consumers with access to safe and sustainable organic fabrics.
SILK : Silk is the world’s most luxurious fiber and is made by spinning and weaving the fibers from the chrysalis of silkworms. It is completely biodegradable and has a low environmental impact. Conventional silk production uses small amounts of pesticide and fertilizer, but the impact is far lower than cotton or synthetics.
The negative aspect of conventional silk production involves boiling the silkworm chrysalis before the moths have emerged. The alternative to traditional silk is Peace Silk, where the silkworms are able to turn into moths and emerge naturally from their cocoons.
All of our silk is certified with Seri.co. The certificate guarantees the health and safety of workers and the avoidance of any form of environmental pollution.
WOOL : Wool is biodegradable, breathable, highly versatile and is typically made from the fleece of sheep (but can also come from goats, alpacas, rabbits and camels). It is one of the most sustainable fabrics and that’s why we love it. Wool has antibacterial properties so it does not require frequent washing. It is naturally water repellent, fire resistant and long-lasting.
Our wool is sourced from high quality animal welfare farms; we use only ethical wool that is certified cruelty free and was manufactured under the highest standards of GOTS and/or The Woolmark Company, and we ensure that all our wools are certified mulesing-free. Mulesing is a controversial and cruel practice similar to circumcision where pieces of skin are removed unnecessarily and without any pain relief to prevent infection that can be managed in other ways.
CUPRO: Cupro is a “regenerated cellulose” fabric made from cotton waste. It is 100% plant-based and fully biodegradable. Cupro is produced in a closed-loop, which means that the chemicals used can be extracted afterwards and the water can be reused. Despite its added chemicals and solvents, many consider cupro’s ecological footprint to be lower than comparable large-quantity, artificial materials.
LYOCELL / TENCEL : Lyocell is a soft man-made textile that is similar to rayon, but requires less chemical processing and doesn't result in chemically-laden waste-water. It is made from renewable cellulose soft-wood crop, and the final textile is completely biodegradable. Chemical processing of the fibre operates on a closed loop system, meaning that 99.5% of the chemicals are captured and reused continuously. The small amount of effluent that is discharged is considered non-hazardous. Tencel is a trademarked version of Lyocell which uses certified, sustainably managed woodstock and is GM free.
